Hyaluronic acid is a component of the skin that helps build it.

In medical aesthetics, it is used as a means of regenerating the skin and reducing wrinkles, providing freshness and youthful appearance to the face and body. Hyaluronic acid is applied by our plastic surgeon Dr Sofoklis Nikolaidis either with mesotherapy or as a filler.

Its application is simple and fast and can be done in the doctor’s office. An anesthetic cream is first applied to the skin and the procedure is almost painless. Hyaluronic acid as a material is colorless and odorless. Depending on the depth of the wrinkles it is available in different densities. The material is injected with a fine needle. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and after it is completed a slight redness may be observed in the area which however disappears quickly.

Over time the functions of hyaluronic acid on our skin lessen. This, in combination with reduced collagen production, makes the skin thinner and less elastic. Hyaluronic acid is a safe injectable material. Its action is based on its ability as a hydrophilic to collect water molecules around it, thus enhancing the volume in the area. By applying it as a filler, we can fill in even deep wrinkles in difficult areas such as around the lips or eyes. An important advantage of hyaluronic acid infusion is the stimulation of collagen production, which offers firmness and improves face contour.

Hyaluronic acid can be applied to various areas of the face such as:

  • Lips
  • Cheekbones
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Glabella
  • Crow’s feet
  • Tear troughs
  • Marionette lines

Of course we can use hyaluronic acid in various areas of the body. With its infusion we can treat any atrophies and tissue asymmetries. Thus, we can smooth out scars from injuries or acne scars, significantly improve the appearance of the hands and wrinkled skin in the area of the neckline or improve the shape of buttocks.

The effects of injectable hyaluronic acid therapy begin to appear within a few hours, which is a significant advantage of the method. Depending on the skin type and the density of the material used, the result will last between 8-18 months.

The hyaluronic acid used as a filler is almost the same as the molecules in our tissues. This is why it is exceptionally safe. It is a substance that does not cause inflammations or allergies. If it is properly injected the only side effect it may have is some light swelling or bruising. In rare cases, if it is injected in the wrong area or in excessive quantities some deformation may occur. But even in this case or if the result is not as expected, the skin can be restored using the antidote.

Liquid hyaluronidase is used as an antidote, as it can break down hyaluronic acid into amino acids, which are then absorbed by the body itself. Some categories of patients suffering from autoimmune diseases or receiving immunosuppressive drugs have unexpected reactions to the infusion materials.

The risk of granuloma formation (foreign body type reaction) is present in individuals of these categories. It should be noted, of course, that in order for the treatment to have optimal results, the injection should be made by specialists who understand the action and properties of hyaluronic acid, while at the same time know the anatomy of the face and body.
