Diagnosis and removal of nevi\/moles<\/h5>

Melanoma can be caused by a dysplastic nevus, but it often comes from healthy skin. Patients who have a greater number of moles and more deformed moles have a higher chance of developing melanomas.<\/p>

Mole mapping in these patients is difficult as the difference between unusual nevi and melanoma can be small Deciding whether a nevus is suspicious enough to warrant biopsy is a science and an art at the same time. It depends on the competence of the dermatologist and their experience. Removing nevi does not reduce a patient\u2019s chances of developing melanoma.<\/p>

Many people have benign but unwanted nevi. It is recommended that patients remove nevi that interfere with their daily activities or can easily be injured. Nevi that are considered unappealing by the patient could be considered for removal after first being evaluated in relation to the risk and benefit. In the majority of the cases, nevi are removed surgically, however it may be possible to remove these using a surgical laser in combination with diathermy. Every treatment is individualized.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The surgical removal of nevi is carried out through an elliptical incision performed on healthy skin.\u00a0The incision usually disappears or is faintly visible. Of course, that depends on the ability of the treating physician and their attention to detail.<\/strong><\/p>

\u2018The surgical removal of nevi, i.e. the removal of nevi using a scalpel and sutures, is the best way possible to remove a mole that looks suspicious. That is a mole that needs to be sent for a biopsy, a histological examination. It is a short procedure that is carried out with the use of local anesthesia. It does not last long. On sites where there is excessive tension, i.e. the wound could re-open, we also use internal sutures that bring together the wound edges and lessen this tension. This way we can use much thinner external sutures which will leave a more discreet and faint mark.<\/p>

What we ask our patients to do is to avoid lifting weights for the days following the surgery. Other than than, they can resume their normal activities. It is very important to remove a mole that is suspicious and send it for histological examination; receiving good results from this examination will relieve us of stress.<\/p>
