Clinical Nutritional Scientist – Dietician

Maria Tzirkalli is a clinical nutritional scientist – dietician, graduate of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics of Harokopio University of Athens and holder of a Master’s Degree by the aforementioned University in Clinical Nutrition. As part of her studies, she completed a traineeship in the hospitals of Athens in the framework of which she dealt with issues such as obesity, diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, intensive care unit treatment and more.

Moreover, during her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, she was a research associate in university research on gene mutations and the effect on nutritional behavior with a sample of both Cypriots and children from primary schools in Athens. The results were published in reputable scientific journals while she also presented the results of her dissertation and postgraduate theis at foreign conferences.

From 2007 to 2009, as a member of the association, she participated in campaigns aiming to promote healthy eating habits as for instance the program implemented in primary schools of Nicosia on the importance of a healthy breakfast, in Day Centers with speeches on vitamins and minerals and in various events of the association. She also participated in the organization of lectures by the Cyprus Diabetic Association as well as in informing young footballers and their parents and guardians during the GrassRoots futsal tournament.

In addition, to this day she gives seminars in public kindergartens and primary schools and participates in TV shows with informational content on various issues related to nutrition. Moreover, she participated and continues to participate in scientific days and seminars such as: 1st Scientific seminar in Diabetes and Nutrition, Educational Seminar in Eating Disorders, Scientific Workshop in Nutrition and Exercise.

Maria is a registered member of the UK Health Professions Council (HPC) as a Registered Dietitian (RD) as well as the Cyprus Association of Dietitians, Nutritionists and Food Technologists and holds a license to practice the profession of Clinical Dietitian by the Cyprus Registration Board for Food Scientists, Food Technologists and Dietitians.

She is really interested in the connection between psychology and eating behavior and applies the techniques of mobilize change talk, as well as the nutritional alliance through which the individual himself determines his goals and the changes he wants to achieve while Dietitian is the “coach” and ally to help the person achieve the goals he sets (diet coaching). In this context, in the last year she has been training in and applying the principles of functional medicine.
